What happens when you drink coke with bread?

People are used to drinking soft drink coke with bread. This eating habit is seen on daily basis, when some people buy soft drink coke, the next thing that will follow is bread. Some said it helps them to stay longer without having the feeling for hunger, some say is cheaper than buying a plate of food, some claim that the combination of coke and bread is very sweet so they like the taste.

The questions are:
Drinking coke with bread does it help us health wise or does it affect our health?
Combination of coke and bread, does it lead to any health issues?
Why do people develop this habit of eating bread with coke?

Many experts have made certain claims about various foods and why they should be avoided. One such person is Dr. William Davis, author of Wheat Belly, who makes this claim:
“People are usually shocked when I tell them that whole wheat bread increases blood sugar to a higher level than sucrose. Aside from some extra fiber, eating two slices of whole wheat bread is really little different, and often worse, than drinking a can of sugar-sweetened soda or eating a sugary candy bar.”

Now from Dr. William Davis statement, eating only wheat bread increase blood sugar, this is only bread now what happened when you eat the bread together with coke that contain sugar also.

Experiment Number One: bread
In this experiment, two slices of bread was taken and the blood sugar was monitored every thirty minutes for the next two hours

Experiment Number Two: Coke
In this experiment, blood glucose was check before drinking the coke. A 12-ounce can of full-sugar Coke was taken and blood sugar was monitored every thirty minutes for the next two hours

The results appear to validate Dr. Davis’ claim. The actual numbers went higher for the bread (152), the starting blood glucose level was also lower (86) before eating the bread compared to the level (97) before drinking the Coke.

The actual amount of the spike in blood glucose was greater after eating the bread. What’s even more interesting is that at the two-hour mark, the blood sugar had returned to normal after drinking the Coke. But after eating the bread, the numbers were starting to climb again at the two-hour mark.
It was also observed that the blood sugar levels climbed and dropped after drinking the Coke. But with the bread, there was a sharp rise between the 30- and 60-minute mark, and a sharp decline between the 60- and 90-minute mark, and the numbers started to rise again at the 2-hour mark.

Bread is a starch, and being a complex carbohydrate. It was a rough ride for the bread and a smooth ride for the Coke. So it almost looks like the bread is actually worse than the Coke.

Consider how often people drink Coke or any sugary soda and how often they don’t eat food while they’re drinking it. People drink coke during meals as well as in-between meals.

Conclusion
This experiment was certainly an eye-opener. the claims being promoted by Dr. William Davis  is true, though it may not accurately reflect the eating habits of most individuals. in my opinion, you would be wise to avoid both full-sugar Coke and bread. The damaging affects of sugar (obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome to name a few), is reason enough to quit eating bread and drinking sugary sodas.
